Sharon, a Trustee since 2025, first started volunteering at Worcester Community Garden the year before that. She feels the Garden represents everything she values in community-driven green spaces – sustainability, education and inclusion.
Sharon has a background in training and education, and with her husband has set up and run several successful companies in both the UK and North America. She has obtained the RHS Level 2 Qualification (Principles of Horticulture) and is a qualified Social and Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner (through THRIVE). She is therefore very well placed to deliver the Garden’s volunteer training programme as well as organising a number of training and other events throughout the year for external visitors.
Away from the garden, Sharon leads monthly gardening groups at The Hive (Worcester’s public and university library), and works with people with dementia in nature and horticulture-themed activities. She also mentors people setting up small businesses, and occasionally finds time to work in her own garden!
If you are thinking of volunteering, Sharon is keen to stress that our approach is very flexible, and there is no pressure to attend or particular experience required. She adds, “The potential benefits are many, including social engagement, skills and knowledge development, access to fresh produce and above all, being a part of our local community. Please come along and chat with our volunteers – we are all very friendly!”
