Steve Dent – Trustee

Steve started volunteering on the site in March 2014 when it was known as the old North Stables Community Garden. In January 2022 Worcester Community Garden was launched at the site, and Steve has been a Trustee since that date. In his working life, Steve spent many years as a negotiator and mediator, most recently at the British Medical Association, where he represented doctors in negotiations with government senior civil servants, helping to navigate complex and often sensitive situations.

Steve feels incredibly proud to be part of Worcester Community Garden, and loves to see the garden bring people together. He says, “It is much more than a growing space—it is somewhere people can learn, contribute, make friends, reconnect with nature and feel part of something shared. I also value the fact that it is shaped by volunteers and continues to evolve through their ideas, energy and commitment. In a time when so many people feel disconnected from each other and from the natural world, the Community Garden offers something practical, positive and rooted in community.”

When he’s not at the Community Garden, Steve enjoys working in his own garden, as well as cycling, walking, cooking and playing chess. He is also learning Italian.

Steve has a message for anyone thinking of volunteering at the Garden. “Please, just come along and give it a try. You certainly don’t need to be an expert gardener and you would not be expected to make a regular commitment. Our volunteers are very welcoming and there is always something useful to do whatever your level of skill. Most people who join us quickly settle in and find they get at least as much from the garden as they give.”
