We are looking for new trustees to join our Board and help us shape the next stage of the charity’s development.
Worcester Community Garden is a thriving volunteer-led charity. We aim to create a welcoming, productive and inclusive green space where people can grow, learn, take part in activities, meet others and enjoy the garden.
We are particularly keen to hear from people with experience, interest or enthusiasm in one of the following four areas (expand each heading for further details):
The Horticulture Trustee Lead will keep an overview of growing activity across Worcester Community Garden and help support good horticultural practice, including promoting the garden’s organic and no-dig principles. They will keep in touch with what is happening in the different growing areas and help make sure our horticultural work reflects the garden’s aims and values.
The trustee will work with site supervisors and volunteers, especially those involved in horticultural projects. They will support and advise rather than take responsibility for day-to-day growing. They may also help us build and maintain links with organisations such as Garden Organic and the Heritage Seed Library.
The Learning, Training & Events Trustee Lead will keep an overview of the garden’s programme of learning, training, workshops and events for volunteers and the wider community. They will help make sure activities are well planned, useful and in keeping with the aims of Worcester Community Garden.
The trustee will work with the volunteers and others who organise and run individual activities, rather than being expected to deliver everything themselves. The role will also include keeping an overview of major events such as the community garden’s annual Eco Fair and Plant Swap and helping with the practical organisation of the AGM.
The Fundraising & External Relations Trustee Lead will help the garden take a planned and organised approach to raising money from outside sources. This will include helping to find suitable funding opportunities, coordinating grant applications and making sure we provide funders with any reports they require.
The trustee will also help build and maintain good relationships with funders, partner organisations and other outside bodies. They may help write funding applications and reports, but the role is not intended to mean that one person has to do all the fundraising themselves.
The Governance, Safeguarding & Compliance Trustee Lead will help the Board make sure Worcester
Community Garden is well run and meets its legal and organisational responsibilities. This will include areas such as safeguarding, health and safety, IT security, risk management, policy reviews and complaints procedures.
The trustee will help make sure policies and procedures are kept up to date, spot areas where action may be needed and help the Board make sure responsibilities are clear. They would not be expected to deal personally with every day-to-day issue, but to help make sure the right systems are in place and are being followed.
Each appointed trustee will take a particular interest in one of these areas, while also sharing responsibility with the rest of the Board for the overall running and direction of the charity. These are leadership and oversight roles, rather than hands-on operational jobs. Trustees work alongside volunteers, site supervisors and others who are already involved in the day-to-day work of Worcester Community Garden. We welcome applications from people who already volunteer with us, as well as people who are completely new to the garden.
We want our Board to reflect the diversity of the community we serve, and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, ages and experiences, including those who may not have thought about becoming a trustee before. If you are not sure whether your skills are a perfect match, please do still consider applying. Curiosity, commitment and a willingness to learn are just as important. Come and grow with us – your ideas, energy and perspective could help our community garden thrive for years to come.
If you would like an informal chat with one of our current trustees before applying, please let us know.
To apply, please write to [email protected] by the closing date, 31 October 2026, telling us briefly about your experience, skills and interests, what you feel you could bring to the Board, and which of the four areas interests you most.
If you are invited to interview, we will talk with you about your experience, interests and what you could contribute to Worcester Community Garden. Some questions will relate to the particular role you are interested in, while others will be about the wider responsibilities of being a trustee.
